10 MINUTES WITH JAKE

Q: WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR TWENTY-YEAR OLD SELF?

Stop sweating the small details and trust the process. When I was younger, I would constantly stress about things about out of my control. We neglect to see that we're constantly making progress everyday and that thing we're stressing over will come, but in due time — so stop rushing and stressing.

Q: WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM FITNESS THAT HAVE SERVED YOU THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE?

Everything evolves. What we know we today can and will change, so keep an open and objective mind always. For me personally, coaching and watching the progression of the industry has been an on-going process of growth. The continual evolution helps you keep an open mind that also questions that status quo.

Q: WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED?

Competition.

Q: WHAT’S THE ONE WORKOUT YOU ALWAYS DREAD? WHAT’S THE ONE WORKOUT YOU ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO? WHY?

Miss me with overhead press and bench workouts. I don't dislike these workouts per se, they're just not as fun as pushing heavy squats and pulling heavy deads. These workouts are like eating vegetables, you need to get them in, but they're not always the most enjoyable. Give me more deadlifts and squats! My body responds best to deadlifts and squats are challenging as hell, so it's always a battle with them, but one I love fighting.

Q: WITH ANY NEW MODALITY YOU GET INTO, HOW DO YOU APPROACH IT IN ORDER TO MASTER?

Beginner mindset, always and respect those with experience. Take the ego and put it to the side.

Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE FAILURE? HOW HAS THAT SET YOU UP FOR LATER SUCCESS?

My favorite failure was graduating with my Bachelors, landing a job at my "dream" company, and quickly realizing I hated it. This "failure" helped me realign, pivot, and direct my energy/life towards something more meaningful.

Q: WHAT IDEA, PERSON OR BOOK HAS BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR LIFE? WHY?

Grandma. She had no freakin' clue about the world of fitness, social media, and so forth, when I explained it to her but she always believed in me. Her blind belief helped create that in myself and that made for anything being possible.

Q: WHY DO YOU PRIORITIZE FITNESS IN YOUR LIFE?

It's battle armor. Every day that we invest in ourselves physically, we add to the accrued interest of longevity and health. Plus, if we do it now while we HAVE the energy, then we'll be able to carry that throughout our lives when societal norms say we should be "old" and "not doing this type of activity at that age". Screw the norm.
