10 MINUTES WITH JUDAH

Q: WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR TWENTY-YEAR OLD SELF?

Never give up on your dreams. Figure out what gets you 110% stoked and go after it with everything you've got.

Q: WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED?

Fear. I love it. Fear makes you uncomfortable and afraid and when I'm afraid I know I'm alive inside the present moment. Fear only shows up in your life when you want to do something. I can take a look back on all the great moments in my life, the places i've been and things i've accomplished. Every one of them involved me facing something that made me uncomfortable or scared the shit out of me and doing it anyway.

Q: WHAT’S THE ONE WORKOUT YOU ALWAYS DREAD? WHAT’S THE ONE WORKOUT YOU ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO? WHY?

I always dread deadlifting. When I was 20 I got a double inguinal Hernia doing a 425lb PR deadlift. I never really could get as stoked on that lift as I used to. I love leg day, 100% stoked on it. If i could only do one exercise for the rest of my life it would be the squat. I love how much it takes out of you, and I'm a firm believer that you're only as functional as your foundation.

Q: WITH ANY NEW MODALITY YOU GET INTO, HOW DO YOU APPROACH IT IN ORDER TO MASTER?

Persistence. Time under pressure. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. It took me over 300 tries to learn how to 360 on a surfboard but I never quit trying because I knew that if i put the time in the result would inevitably be success.

Q: WHAT IDEA, PERSON OR BOOK HAS BEEN THE MOST INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR LIFE? WHY?

My younger sister Ella. She's my role model, I've learned so much from her. She beat alcohol addiction at 16 and has been sober for the last decade. She moved to Australia for a year and a half at 19. She started sending it and that drove me to step my game up. We moved to Hawaii together in 2018 and ever since then we've been pushing each other to become better humans. She holds me accountable, elevates and encourages me, and loves me unconditionally. Everyone needs someone like her in their life.

Q: HOW DO YOU EMBRACE THE “BETTER THAN YESTERDAY” MINDSET IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY?

There's one person I'm always trying to beat and thats the man staring back at me when I look into a mirror. The better than yesterday mindset has always been about one thing for me and thats growth. A growth mindset is absolutely essential to a purpose driven life. I'm showing up every day giving my best effort to build on everything I put into life thus far. That doesn't mean I never fail, I've failed more than most, but I've made a commitment to myself to always learn from my mistakes and that has made a monumental difference.

Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE FAILURE? HOW HAS THAT SET YOU UP FOR LATER SUCCESS?

When I was 18 up until almost 23 I really struggled with alcohol. I was in and out of jail, I got suspended from the University of Georgia, burned a lot of bridges with people who loved me, and honestly was just completely miserable. When I quit drinking and started looking inside myself for the answers to some hard questions it changed my perspective on life. It took a lot of work for me to get where I am now but putting myself through something like that enabled me to nail down what really matters to me in life. Sobriety has enabled me to process emotions the right way and to invest my time in things that I'm truly passionate about. I never could have moved to Hawaii or picked up a camera unless I got sober first.

Q: WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM FITNESS THAT HAVE SERVED YOU THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE?

Fitness has taught me humility. It's taught me how to be teachable. If you keep your eyes and ears open theres always something to be learned, theres always more knowledge to be attained. No one human being knows everything.
