ABOUT RICH

A hero in the ultra-running community, Rich Roll is an ultra-endurance athlete, wellness & plant-based nutrition advocate, and notable author and podcaster. As an extreme endurance competitor, Rich has competed in some of the country’s most grueling challenges. Among numerous other feats, he’s one of the first to endure the EPIC5 CHALLENGE — five full-Ironman distance triathlons in five days on the five islands of Hawaii. He also is a two-time top finisher at the Ultraman triathlon world championships — a grueling, three-day / 320 mile double-ironman distance race that consists of a 6.2 mile swim, 260 miles of cycling and a 52 mile run through the lava fields of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

With his experience competing in some of the world’s most grueling fitness challenges and his plant-powered lifestyle that has inspired countless individuals around the world to rethink their diet, exercise and overall way of life, we wanted to work with Rich to build a collection that embodied all the facets of who he is and what he’s done.

THE PROCESS

Building the FAR Collection was an exercise in careful study and close collaboration. After over a year in development, countless prototypes, and thousands of miles of testing, we’re proud to bring you a thoughtfully sustainable and high-performance run kit built for every athlete who runs not only to benefit the body, but to care for the mind.

IDEATION

As an elite endurance athlete, Rich Roll understands the role that the right gear can play in driving performance. At the same time, as an environmental champion, Rich is also uniquely attuned to his ecological footprint. Rich had never found gear that married these two passions — so we set out to build it with him. That’s why the FAR Collection was built from the ground up to have as small of a footprint as possible and meeting the demands of serious training. We weren't only focused on using recycled fabrics and sustainable materials, but we also leaned into Rich’s less is more mentality. This means creating a product that is not only better for the environment, but also making a product that is long lasting and won’t need to be replaced each season.

“I saw this collaboration as an opportunity to fill a gap in the market and develop gear that meets my high standards of both performance and sustainability.”

PROTOTYPE

Creating a product that doesn’t yet exist in the market is challenging — but it also gave us the chance to build something truly differentiated. With Rich’s hyper-focus on sustainability and ecological footprint, we knew we couldn’t waste a single inch of fabric. We had to build a shirt with everything that Rich — and other elite runners needed — and nothing they didn't. To do that, we spent countless brainstorming sessions together envisioning Rich’s ideal product. We created tons of prototypes. And we committed to putting them out in the real world and seeing how they performed for ourselves.

“I’ve tried what feels like every running shirt under the sun. This design process allowed me to incorporate each of my favorite features, without sacrificing sustainability or quality.”

TEST

Rich knows that to get a feel for his gear, he needs to put it to the test. Rich had ideas of what he thought he would like, but he approached the testing process with an open mind. That’s why we committed to a ruthless testing process for each iteration. These tests uncovered truths Rich hadn’t considered — and ensured that our finished product stood up to real-world wear.

Every comment, call out, and complaint I had was heard during the testing process. The attention to detail that the Ten Thousand team showed was unparalleled.”

THE RESULTS

After over a year of brainstorming, prototyping, and testing, Rich’s FAR Collection serves as the ultimate manifestation of high-performance and eco-friendly run gear. The Short, Shirt, and Beanie aren’t what Rich imagined on day one — but that’s a good thing. The fabrics have evolved, the tech has advanced, and the fit has improved to ensure the FAR Collection sets the standard for premium, sustainable run gear built to last for miles on end.

“I couldn’t be more excited to share this capsule with you all. It’s the result of hours of collaborative work, all done with meaning and purpose throughout. I’m really proud of what we’ve built, and hope it takes you places on your next run.”

FEATURES

The development of the FAR Shirt was driven by a singular goal: to build a high-performance run shirt that exceeded the demands of an endurance luminary while creating a small ecological footprint. To do this, we relied on two core principles: building a product that relied on a less is more mentality, and focusing on the details runners need. Every element of the FAR Shirt — from the recycled fabrics to the anti-odor treatment — was designed to be eco-friendly without sacrificing comfort, quality, and performance.

LESS IS MORE

From day one of the product development process, Rich emphasized the “fewer and better” mentality he lives by. Rather than buying a ton of low-quality gear and replacing it every season, Rich looks for shirts that are made to last — with premium, sustainable, and vegan materials. Built from fabrics made of recycled materials that still stand up to the wear and tear of training or competition, the FAR Shirt embodies Rich’s mentality.

  • Lightweight and breathable performance fabrics made from Bluesign and GRS certified recycled vegan materials
  • 100% recycled paper hang tags
  • Eco friendly Polygiene Biostatic permanent anti-odor treatment

DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

As an ultra-endurance athlete, Rich has spent his fair share of time in running gear. Whether he’s in Hawaii competing in Ironman races or in LA training in the hills, there are a few things that he can’t stand about every shirt he’s tried. From seam positioning to sleeve length, even the smallest of detail was thoughtfully designed to create Rich’s perfect run shirt.

  • Ultra-lightweight and breathable mesh fabric for breathability and weight reduction
  • Sweat-wicking for weight reduction and to keep you dry and comfortable
  • Long sleeve option designed for maximum comfort and breathability on days you need a little more coverage

NEW FROM OLD

We believe in the less is more view of sustainable gear. From our fabrics to our packaging, we’ve worked to source some of the most sustainable options out there without sacrificing performance. Will this kit check every box and solve the big issues we face? No, but we do know it’s pushing in the right direction and part of our journey to become Better Than Yesterday.
